Royal Canadian Air Force selects Pilatus PC-21 for future aircrew training programme

By Defence Industry Europe

The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) is set to modernise its pilot training capabilities with the acquisition of 19 cutting-edge PC-21 training aircraft. Pilatus, a Swiss aerospace company, has confirmed the signing of a significant contract with KF Aerospace, part of the SkyAlyne partnership for the RCAF’s "Future Aircrew Training" (FAcT) programme.

The advanced PC-21 trainers will be stationed at Moose Jaw airbase in Saskatchewan by 2026. This move is part of a 25-year initiative aimed at enhancing and expanding the RCAF’s training infrastructure to meet the demands of modern military aviation.

SkyAlyne senior executive Kevin Lemke highlighted the aircraft’s numerous advantages: “The PC-21 offers numerous benefits over conventional training aircraft and is equipped with cutting-edge avionics to ensure a seamless transition to frontline jets.” Lemke also emphasised its cost-effectiveness and efficiency, describing the PC-21 as “the ideal choice for Canada.”

Pilatus CEO Markus Bucher expressed pride in the collaboration, stating: “This contract is further proof of the capabilities of our PC-21 training system. Canada ranks amongst the world’s most renowned and professional air forces, and we’re very proud to be part of this groundbreaking project.” Bucher affirmed Pilatus’s commitment to delivering a world-class training system and exceptional customer support.

Vice President of Government Aviation at Pilatus, Ioannis Papachristofilou, called the contract a “significant achievement,” noting that the PC-21 would become the backbone of Canada’s military pilot training programme for decades.

The PC-21 is globally recognised as a leading training platform, offering modern solutions tailored to current pilot training needs. It incorporates advanced mission planning and debriefing systems alongside ground-based training materials, providing a comprehensive and integrated approach.

With nearly 250 PC-21 aircraft already in operation worldwide, Pilatus’s design has proven successful in training pilots for air forces across Europe, the Middle East, and Australia. The Swiss Air Force has relied on the PC-21 since 2008, demonstrating its capability and reliability in producing highly skilled military pilots.
