Sweden and United States sign agreement to strengthen Special Forces cooperation

Sweden and the United States signed a statement of intent to enhance cooperation between their respective special forces. While the specifics of the agreement remain classified, it aims to strengthen operational capabilities and foster closer collaboration between the two nations’ elite military units.

“The current security situation has increased the importance of cooperation. The United States is an important partner to Sweden, and the special forces are an important resource in addressing developments in our neighbourhood,” said Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson. “This statement of intent will further strengthen our already good relations with the United States and enable enhanced cooperation.”

Christopher P. Maier, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict, emphasised the value of collaboration: “This statement of intent is another important step in the deep relationship between the United States and Sweden, and allows us to strengthen our partnership, address regional challenges, counter provocations, and work towards our common security.”

Swedish special forces play a critical role in national security, capable of operating during peace, crises, and wartime to deter threats and defend Swedish interests both domestically and internationally. Previous cooperation with US special forces includes joint exercises, such as the 2021 operation on Gotland, where the US deployed its High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) near Visby.

This latest agreement builds on ongoing US-Swedish defence collaboration. In 2024, Sweden signed a defence cooperation agreement and a strategic partnership programme with the US National Guard, further reinforcing its national and collective defence capabilities.
