A cornerstone of this new support package is the introduction of Airborne Surveillance and Control aircraft (ASC 890). This strategic enhancement will provide Ukraine with advanced capabilities to detect and engage both airborne and maritime threats at long range. Additionally, the package includes comprehensive training, technical equipment, and methodological support to ensure effective air surveillance and command control.
To complement this, Sweden will supply Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (RB 99-AMRAAM). These missiles will be modified for use in ground-based air defence systems, significantly boosting Ukraine’s defensive reach. In response to these donations, Sweden plans to procure new missiles and additional GlobalEye aircraft to mitigate the temporary decrease in its own defence capacity.
Recognizing the pressing need for artillery ammunition on the battlefield, Sweden will provide Ukraine with a substantial quantity of 155 mm artillery shells. This provision aims to enhance Ukraine’s ability to conduct operations and engage Russian forces effectively. Sweden will address its reduced stockpile by acquiring replacement grenades to ensure its own readiness.
As Ukraine continues to organize new military brigades, Sweden will donate its entire stock of PBV 302 armoured tracked personnel carriers. This includes all necessary spare parts, maintenance equipment, and ammunition. These vehicles are crucial for the formation of infantry companies within these new brigades. To offset this significant donation, Sweden will initiate procurement of replacement armoured vehicles.
Since the onset of Russia’s aggressive actions in February 2022, Sweden has committed SEK 43.5 billion in various forms of support to Ukraine. The current package, integrated into an upcoming additional amending budget, underscores Sweden’s dedication to supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and enhancing its military capabilities.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson emphasized the strategic importance of this package, stating, “Our support is crucial for Ukraine’s defence against ongoing aggression. This package not only strengthens their immediate capabilities but also ensures long-term resilience.”
