U.S. Air Force: 480th Fighter Squadron enhances combat readiness during Turbo Weasel exercise in Germany

By Defence Industry Europe

Airmen from the U.S. Air Force’s 480th Fighter Squadron participated in exercise Turbo Weasel at Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, from 18–26 March and 8–17 April 2025. The exercise focused on the Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD) mission, replicating complex and high-intensity operational conditions.

Turbo Weasel aimed to create a realistic, intricate battlespace to prepare pilots for modern combat scenarios. “There’s no substitute for the kind of dynamic environment we create during Turbo Weasel,” said Capt. Nick Mondragon, F-16 Fighting Falcon pilot with the 480th FS.

The training enabled the certification of several fighter pilots as SEAD wingmen, flight leads, and instructor pilots. “Being exposed to a large number of aircraft in a shared airspace, while executing a complex mission, pushes our skills to the limit,” Mondragon explained.

The 480th FS collaborated with the 555th Fighter Squadron, known as the “Triple Nickel,” based at Aviano Air Base, Italy. Additional U.S. units from various global locations contributed tanker support to sustain extended sorties.

“Working with pilots who specialise in different mission sets challenges us to adapt our tactics in real time,” said Mondragon. “It helps us become more flexible and responsive in joint operations.”

Maintenance crews played a crucial role in ensuring aircraft readiness by quickly inspecting, repairing, and preparing jets for rapid redeployment. The demanding exercise scenario offered comprehensive training across the airfield support structure.

“With longer, more demanding sorties, the aircraft return with maintenance needs we don’t typically see during routine training flights,” Mondragon noted. “It gives our maintenance teams an opportunity to troubleshoot and sustain jets under more realistic operational conditions.”

Turbo Weasel reinforced force readiness and warfighting capabilities through immersive, integrated training. “Exercises like this don’t just build pilot proficiency, they prepare our entire unit to deploy and execute under pressure,” Mondragon said.
