U.S. F-35A Lightning II fighters from the 48th Fighter Wing are participating in the Marrakech Airshow, which runs October 7–10 in Morocco. They form part of an American contingent of approximately 45 military personnel at the Marrakech Royal Moroccan Air Force Base.

The F-35As are based at RAF Lakenheath in the United Kingdom. The U.S. contingent also includes an HC-130J from Alaska’s 176th Wing and a KC-135 Stratotanker from the Utah National Guard, both on static display.

The participation comes ahead of the 250th anniversary of the U.S.-Moroccan alliance. U.S. Africa Command said the event allows pilots, maintainers and security personnel from both countries to work together, exchange ideas and build trust.

“It is an honor to be at Marrakech ahead of the 250th anniversary of the U.S.-Moroccan Alliance,” said U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Matthew J. French, Air National Guard assistant to the commander of U.S. Air Forces in Europe–Air Forces Africa. “Hosted by the United States’ oldest Ally, this forum best illustrates our goal of establishing strong and enduring Allied and partner forces for an evolving security environment.”

Morocco was the first country to recognize U.S. independence and seek diplomatic relations with the United States. The partnership continues to focus on shared interests in regional peace, security and prosperity.

“For decades, our nations have flown side-by-side, from our vital pilot training pipelines to our complex joint operations,” said Duke Buchan III, U.S. ambassador to Morocco. “The United States remains deeply committed to standing with our Moroccan partners, delivering cutting-edge aerospace capabilities and working hand-in-hand to promote regional peace, stability, and shared prosperity across the African continent.”

U.S. units taking part

The 48th Fighter Wing is the largest U.S. fighter operation in Europe. Its four combat-ready fighter squadrons operate F-15 Strike Eagles and F-35A Lightning II aircraft.

The Utah National Guard’s partnership with Morocco dates to 2003 under the State Partnership Program. Its 151st Wing operates KC-135R tankers for aerial refueling, aeromedical evacuation and cargo missions.

The Alaska Air National Guard’s 176th Wing is based at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. Its fleet includes C-17A transports, HC-130J rescue aircraft and HH-60W helicopters, with Guardian Angel personnel supporting rescue operations.
