USS Pinckney has entered a shipyard period at General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego for the U.S. Navy’s first installation of the SPY-6(V)4 radar. The destroyer will also receive new High Efficiency Super-Capacity air conditioning plants to support its upgraded combat systems.

The work marks the second phase of the Arleigh Burke-class ship’s upgrades under the Destroyer Modernization 2.0 program. The radar will be integrated with Aegis Combat System Baseline 10, while the new cooling plants will help support the combat systems’ electrical and thermal requirements.

“The collective effort by all stakeholders has finally brought us to the point of execution,” said Capt. Tim Moore, program manager for DDG MOD 2.0. “Upon Depot Modernization Period completion, USS Pinckney will rejoin the Fleet equipped with the most comprehensive multi-spectral integrated sensor suite designed to maintain maritime superiority for decades to come.”

Pinckney completed its earlier modernization period, designated DMP 1.5, in 2024. It became the first warship to receive the SLQ-32(V)7 Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program system and sponson modifications.

The Navy adopted a phased installation approach, called Split Start, to build experience across its industry partners. Pinckney deployed to the Pacific and Middle East after completing the earlier work.

The Navy said the deployment validated the ship’s advanced warfare capabilities in contested operational environments. The destroyer has now returned for the radar and cooling installations that form the next stage of its modernization.
