The delivery of this advanced aircraft is contingent upon the completion of TR-3 modification certification, projected by the manufacturer to be finalised by the end of the current quarter. This certification will pave the way for the aircraft to meet the Block 4 standard, under which all Belgian F-35As will be delivered.
Initially, like other international users, Belgium’s first F-35As will be stationed at a base within the United States. The transition of these aircraft to Belgium is scheduled to commence in 2025. Ultimately, Belgium will have two bases equipped to fully operate the F-35A Lightning II.
The decision to procure the F-35A Lightning II was made in 2018, with interoperability with allies, including the Netherlands, being a pivotal factor. This collaboration aims to enhance the airspace security of the entire Benelux region. Currently, the Belgian Air Force operates the Lockheed Martin F-16AM/BM Fighting Falcon, which remains heavily utilised for both local and allied missions.
