German firm FLANQ unveils Q-RECON USV for coastal surveillance and tactical missions

By Defence Industry Europe

German maritime defence specialist FLANQ has announced the launch of Q-RECON, its first uncrewed surface vessel (USV) designed and manufactured entirely in Europe. The two-metre-long craft has been developed to meet an urgent operational requirement from a European client for littoral zone missions.

Q-RECON is compact and portable, designed for use by a two-person team and weighing enough to carry a 30 kg internal payload. The vessel is tailored for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and tactical interdiction, with capabilities suited to covert monitoring, infrastructure inspection, and beach landing reconnaissance.

Equipped with a range of sensors including 360° night vision and multi-spectral cameras, Q-RECON offers flexible mission deployment. Its performance across various naval scenarios, including one-time use, makes it a useful tool for naval special forces.

The USV is powered by FLANQ-developed vectored jet drives, giving it enhanced manoeuvrability and burst speeds of up to 30 knots. Navigation is supported by an onboard autopilot, GPS, IMU, and optional dead-reckoning features, allowing operation in environments without GNSS.

Mission flexibility is driven by FLANQ’s proprietary Q-KONTROL and Q-MIND hardware and software, which enable autonomous route planning and real-time payload adjustments in the field. This allows for rapid adaptation during complex and changing operational conditions.

“Q-RECON has gone from concept to in-water testing in around 120 days – testimony to the speed of innovation in the European defence sector at the demand for affordable maritime autonomous systems,” said Jannik Sauer, Chief Technology Officer at FLANQ. “Our customer came to us with a very specific feature list, including price and portability and 100% European content. Q-RECON is our response to those challenges.”
