Korea Aerospace Industries offers FA-50 fighter jets to Bulgaria as replacement for aging fleet

By Defence Industry Europe

Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) is offering its FA-50 light combat aircraft to Bulgaria as an optimal solution for the country’s aging air fleet. This move comes as KAI seeks to expand its presence in Eastern and Central Europe, targeting nations that need to modernize their military capabilities.

Bulgaria’s current fleet includes older models such as the L-39, MiG-29, and Su-25 aircraft, which are becoming increasingly outdated. KAI is positioning the FA-50 as the perfect replacement, offering a modern, versatile platform that can handle both training and combat roles. The FA-50’s ability to perform a wide range of missions, from air defence to ground attack, makes it a valuable asset for any air force looking to upgrade.

The FA-50 is not only cost-effective but also delivers strong performance, providing up to 80% of the capabilities of more advanced, but significantly more expensive, fourth-generation fighter jets. This makes it an attractive option for Bulgaria, especially as it seeks to balance the need for modern technology with budget constraints.

A key selling point for the FA-50 is its compatibility with NATO standards, including real-time data exchange via the Link-16 system and integration with Western-made weapons. This compatibility is crucial for Bulgaria, which is a NATO member and participates in regional defence activities. The FA-50’s high interoperability with the F-16, an aircraft that the Bulgarian Air Force plans to operate, further strengthens its appeal as a seamless addition to Bulgaria’s defence arsenal.

KAI’s push to sell the FA-50 to Bulgaria follows its successful contract with Poland in September 2022, where it secured a deal to provide 48 FA-50 aircraft. Now, with an eye on Bulgaria and other countries in the region, KAI is promoting the FA-50 as a reliable, cost-efficient option for modernizing air forces across Eastern and Central Europe.
