The operation, conducted within NATO’s integrated air and missile defence framework, will include the deployment of 100 soldiers, NASAMS air defence systems, and F-35 fighter jets. The mission will run from December to Easter and aims to ensure the secure delivery of aid to Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict.
“This way, Norway contributes to ensuring that aid to Ukraine reaches its destination, allowing Ukraine to continue its fight for freedom,” said Minister of Defence Bjørn Arild Gram. The mission also reflects NATO’s rotational support strategy, with allies sharing the responsibility for safeguarding Polish airspace.
Rzeszów airport, crucial for logistics and medical evacuations, plays a vital role in the international effort to aid Ukraine. “Poland is making a tremendous effort to ensure that both civilian and military supplies reach Ukraine. The airport is also central to the medical evacuation efforts that Norway is responsible for,” Gram added.
The importance of air defence has been underscored by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “The Norwegian contribution in Poland is highly appreciated. We are doing this primarily for Ukraine and Poland, but it also shows that we stand by our commitments within NATO,” said Gram.
The Norwegian government has assured the public that national security will not be compromised during the mission. Careful assessments have been made to ensure the country’s preparedness and operational capabilities remain robust while supporting NATO’s efforts in Poland.
