Patria to supply additional 56 armoured vehicles to Latvia under CAVS programme

By Defence Industry Europe

Finnish defence manufacturer Patria has reached an agreement with the Latvian Ministry of Defence to deliver an additional 56 armoured 6x6 vehicles as part of the ongoing Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) programme. This agreement supplements current deliveries and focuses on command and control (C2) units, enhancing Latvia’s defence infrastructure.

The new contract will leverage local Latvian industry, specifically Patria’s production facility in Valmiera, which opened in May 2024. Deliveries are set to begin this year and will continue through to 2029, with the contract valued at over EUR 60 million.

“The new Patria 6×6 armoured command and control vehicles will significantly improve the operational capabilities of our armed forces, as well as contribute to the development of the Latvian military industry, continuing the successful cooperation between the defence sector and industry,” stated Andris Sprūds, Latvia’s Minister of Defence. The vehicles are expected to play a crucial role in bolstering Latvia’s command capabilities.

Mats Warstedt, Patria’s Senior Vice President of Market Area Nordics, praised the collaboration, noting that “the deep cooperation between Patria, Latvia, and other CAVS member nations has yet again proved its benefits in the form of a cost-effective and efficient research and development programme.” Latvia becomes the first customer for this command and control variant, illustrating the benefits of the multinational CAVS programme.

The CAVS programme, currently involving Finland, Latvia, Sweden, and Germany, was launched in late 2020 to develop and produce interoperable armoured vehicles across member nations. By prioritising collaboration, the programme supports cost-sharing and the use of local industry, thereby strengthening the security of supply for all participants.

Patria, a leader in troop transport and systems integration, leads the vehicle development within the CAVS programme, drawing on over 40 years of experience. With orders exceeding 750 vehicles, the CAVS programme continues to expand, and additional European countries with similar needs may join upon approval, ensuring continued growth and reinforcement of defence capabilities across the region.
