Poland: WB Group secures multi-million order for cutting-edge Force Protection systems

By Lukasz Prus (Defence Industry Europe)

Poland has formalised a EUR 117 million agreement with WB Electronics, a leading domestic defence contractor, to procure 12 state-of-the-art Force Protection drone systems. Signed on 24 December by the Armament Agency, the contract aims to bolster the situational awareness and air protection of the Polish Armed Forces, specifically for the HOMAR-K rocket artillery divisions.

The Force Protection systems will be deployed to enhance the reconnaissance and protection of operational regions, including those of HOMAR-K multiple-launch rocket systems and supporting vehicles. The systems will integrate advanced drone technologies, national combat solutions, and specialised communications and artillery software to ensure comprehensive coverage.

Each Force Protection system includes several components tailored to modern combat needs. The agreement includes hundreds of FlyEye and X-Fronter unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), FP-SPECTRE radio-electronic reconnaissance systems, and integration with the Polish TOPAZ combat management system. Additional provisions cover telecommunications equipment, vehicle-mounted and personal radios, and extended-range communication solutions, such as the PERAD system, produced by WB Group.

The FlyEye UAVs are designed for aerial imaging and reconnaissance. Equipped with optoelectronic payloads featuring day and thermal cameras, they can also be configured with radio signal retransmitters. These drones have already demonstrated their effectiveness in Poland’s operational and territorial defence forces and have proven reliable in high-intensity conflicts.

X-Fronter UAVs are modular, scalable drones capable of vertical take-off and landing. They provide covert reconnaissance capabilities, with advanced imaging systems for day and night operations across all seasons. Their mission profiles include target identification, strike assessment, force protection, operational support, and reconnaissance.

As part of the agreement, the systems will be installed on HOMAR-K launchers, accompanying artillery vehicles, and specialist 4×4 terrain vehicles. The package also includes artillery-specific software, such as the UKART-2 universal artillery calculators, and a training and logistical support programme. Deliveries are set to commence in 2025 and conclude by 2028.
