Roketsan successfully test-fires long-range Atmaca UM cruise missile

By Defence Industry Europe

Turkish defence company Roketsan has announced the successful test-firing of a long-range cruise missile variant of its Atmaca anti-ship missile (Atmaca UM). The test, which took place at the company’s test facility on the Sinop peninsula along Türkiye's Black Sea coast, marks a significant milestone in the development of advanced missile technology for the country.

The company released a video showcasing the missile, identified as the Atmaca UM, being launched from a mobile platform and striking a target on a floating platform at an unspecified distance. The Atmaca UM, previously referred to as the Atmaca Kara, has been developed for strategic land-based targets, offering enhanced range and precision.

This test marks the first public acknowledgment of a successful launch of the Atmaca UM/Kara. However, Roketsan suggested that previous tests had already demonstrated the missile’s extended range and flight duration capabilities. The Atmaca UM is reported to have a range of 280 km, surpassing the original Atmaca’s range of over 220 km. Additionally, it features an imaging infrared (IIR) seeker for terminal guidance, an upgrade from the active radar seeker used in earlier models.
