Royal Navy: HMS Sutherland returns to sea after Babcock-led upgrade

By Defence Industry Europe

HMS Sutherland has set sail for initial training and sea trials following an extensive upgrade programme led by Babcock. The modernisation marks a key milestone in the Royal Navy frigate’s return to full operational capability.

Babcock successfully delivered a series of major enhancements, including an upgraded power generation and machinery system, structural surveys, and the installation of critical new systems. These improvements ensure HMS Sutherland remains a highly capable asset, supporting the Royal Navy’s operational commitments into the 2030s.

The upgrade was carried out in collaboration with the Royal Navy and the Ministry of Defence (MOD), reflecting a joint commitment to sustaining and enhancing the fleet’s capability. The project is part of the Royal Navy’s wider effort to maintain a modern and effective force in response to evolving security challenges.

Before setting sail, HMS Sutherland was officially handed back to the Royal Navy during a small ceremony onboard. She then departed from the River Tamar into Plymouth Sound, marking the next phase of her preparations for operational deployment.

Sir Nick Hine, Chief Executive of Babcock’s Marine Sector, praised the efforts of the team, emphasising their expertise in delivering through-life support for the Royal Navy. He stated that the successful completion of the upgrade puts HMS Sutherland firmly on track to rejoin the fleet and contribute to national defence.
