The procurement strengthens the RAF’s ability to counter the evolving threat from uncrewed aerial systems. It followed several years of collaboration between the service and Saab, drawing on earlier capability upgrades and operational experience.
Saab mobilised its global production capacity at short notice to complete the delivery. The company also used its UK manufacturing and support operations to accelerate work on the requirement.
The Giraffe 1X systems will complement the RAF Regiment’s continuing role in providing counter-UAS protection for British and coalition forces. That mission includes operations in the Middle East, where specialist units defend personnel and facilities against drones.

“As the customer, we have been impressed with how Saab were able to mobilise their global production capacity to rapidly satisfy our Giraffe 1X requirement in support of Counter Drone operations on deployed operations,” a Royal Air Force spokesperson said. “This equipment is critical in mitigating the risk to life posed by the drone threat.”
The delivery expands the UK’s investment in force-protection capabilities at a time of rising operational demand for counter-drone systems. It also reflects the RAF’s effort to respond more quickly to emerging airborne threats through closer cooperation with industry.
