The discussions at Karlberg Palace were followed by meetings with representatives of Sweden’s defence industry, exploring potential collaboration with Ukraine. During a subsequent press conference, Minister Jonson outlined plans for a new Swedish financial contribution to Ukraine’s defence sector. This contribution is expected to bolster Ukraine’s efforts in producing advanced weaponry, including long-range drones and missiles, for donation to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
If approved, this initiative will form part of Sweden’s 18th military support package for Ukraine, planned for early 2025. “This is a clear demonstration of Sweden’s commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and security,” Minister Jonson stated during the announcement. Enhanced international cooperation with allies and partners may also be included, aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s defence manufacturing capabilities further.
The forthcoming package is set to be financed within the framework of Sweden’s three-year military support programme, which allocates SEK 25 billion annually between 2024 and 2026. This initiative underscores Sweden’s long-term commitment to supporting Ukraine in the ongoing conflict and its strategic focus on enhancing Ukraine’s technological edge in defence.
