According to the Army, the exercise is intended to validate procedures for launching, monitoring and recovering high-altitude platforms in the European theater. The training will involve Micro High-Altitude Balloons operating at altitudes between approximately 60,000 and 70,000 feet.
The Army said the platforms will be used to test sensing and communications technologies that could support future multi-domain operations and improve operational awareness. The launch is scheduled to take place in Sweden, with recovery operations expected in Latvia after approximately 24 to 30 hours of flight.
Officials stated that the exercise will be conducted in approved airspace and closely coordinated with host-nation authorities. The Army said the activity is intended to ensure operational transparency and safety throughout the mission.
Jeffrey Pickler said the training would help Soldiers evaluate new technologies alongside allied forces. “This event allows our Soldiers to experiment with emerging technologies while working closely with our NATO Allies,” Pickler said.
