U.S. Navy orders tactical data link solutions from BAE Systems in USD 85 million deal

By Defence Industry Europe

In 2024, defence technology leader BAE Systems was awarded an $85 million contract by the U.S. Navy to deliver additional Network Tactical Common Data Link (NTCDL) systems. The NTCDL technology is designed to enable real-time sharing of voice, data, imagery, and video across various platforms, including air, surface, subsurface, and portable sources.

The new systems will be installed on U.S. Navy aircraft carriers under the company’s current contract and deployed on the Navy’s upcoming Constellation-class frigates. This latest development underscores BAE Systems’ commitment to supporting the U.S. Navy’s evolving connectivity and communication needs.

Amber Dolan, director of Adaptive Communications and Sensing at BAE Systems, highlighted the innovation behind the project. “We have designed and produced a faster next-generation system to meet the demands of our customers’ evolving connectivity mission requirements,” she said, emphasising the importance of secure and reliable solutions for critical mission information.

NTCDL is a flexible, multi-platform system addressing all U.S. Navy Common Data Link (CDL) requirements. Its modular, scalable design allows for increased link capacity, adapts to evolving waveforms, and supports simultaneous operations across multiple networks. Operators can transmit and receive real-time intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance data while coordinating command and control activities across both manned and unmanned platforms.

This contract modification extends BAE Systems’ existing agreement with the Navy, extending the programme’s performance timeline by three years. As the original developer of the NTCDL system, BAE Systems is well-positioned to meet the urgent production and engineering demands required for this advanced communication technology.
