Ukraine and UK sign agreement on defence industry cooperation

By Defence Industry Europe

The United Kingdom and Ukraine have bolstered their alliance with a new defence agreement, aiming to enhance cooperation in defence and industrial sectors. The pact, signed in Kyiv amidst the UK's largest trade mission to Ukraine, underscores the UK's steadfast support for Ukraine, focusing on making military operations more efficient and tackling security challenges together.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to support Ukraine’s defence and long-term recovery, demonstrating the UK’s commitment through a trade mission that saw 29 British businesses explore cooperative ventures in Ukraine. The Framework Arrangement builds on the foundation of the historic UK-Ukraine Agreement on Security Cooperation signed in January 2024, marking the beginning of a century-long partnership.

Key outcomes of this collaboration include strategic military repair facilities, the reconstruction of civilian infrastructure, and advancements in cyber-defence technology. A notable achievement is the contract between BAE Systems and the UK Ministry of Defence to maintain and repair L119 Light Guns in Ukraine, facilitating quicker return of these vital assets to the front lines.

The UK has contributed almost GBP 12 billion in support to Ukraine, spanning military, humanitarian, and economic domains. This partnership not only strengthens military capabilities but also involves the UK’s private sector significantly in Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts. Initiatives such as the UK-Ukraine Infrastructure Taskforce and the National Digital Twin Programme are instrumental in rebuilding and modernizing Ukraine’s infrastructure, with UK Export Finance playing a critical role in revitalizing essential services and facilities.
