Belgium and Netherlands select Bofors 40Mk4 naval gun for ASW frigate

BAE Systems, the British defence technology leader, has secured a contract from the Dutch Materiel and IT Command (COMMIT) for the supply of eight Bofors 40Mk4 naval gun systems. This deal will support the Royal Netherlands and Belgian Navies, reinforcing their combined Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) frigates programme, BAE Systems said in a press release.

 

This joint initiative provides both nations with two state-of-the-art frigates each, equipped with two naval gun systems per ship. The contract signifies a crucial step in bolstering maritime defence capabilities in Northern Europe.

“This key milestone will ensure the new frigates have the cutting-edge capabilities they require, with the addition of our advanced 3P ammunition,” said Stefan Löfström, marketing and sales director at BAE Systems Bofors. He added, “BAE Systems continues to support our NATO allies by delivering enhanced capabilities to help to keep Europe safe.”

Included in the contract are comprehensive services such as installation, training, documentation, and the provision of spare parts and tools. The agreement also offers an option for the advanced 3P programmable ammunition, known for its flexibility, along with additional gun systems for training purposes. The initial delivery is planned for 2026.

The Bofors 40Mk4 is a modern, lightweight naval gun system tailored for both anti-aircraft and anti-surface warfare. Its advanced design allows seamless switching between various types of ammunition, enabling effective responses to a broad range of air, land, and sea threats.

With six programmable function modes, the system can deliver optimal performance tailored to specific operational needs.
