General Dynamics European Land Systems delivers floating bridges to Royal Netherlands Army

By Defence Industry Europe

The Royal Netherlands Army has begun receiving deliveries of the Improved Ribbon Bridge (IRB) pontoon bridge system from General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS). On 25 November, the Dutch Command Materiel and IT (COMMIT) took delivery of the first components at Hedel, marking a milestone in modernising the Army's bridging capabilities.

The IRB systems are designed to replace older pontoon bridges currently in use. Each system comprises multiple bridge pontoons, new bridge erection boats supplied by Birdon America, and updated bridge adapter pallets, which underwent a mid-life upgrade by Hiab. The IRB bridges are capable of supporting all NATO vehicles, including the heaviest main battle tanks, making them a crucial addition to the Army’s logistical and operational flexibility.

One of the system’s standout features is its interoperability with IRB systems used by other NATO allies, including the United States, Germany, and Sweden. Additionally, the IRB can be coupled with the widely used M3 amphibious bridge and ferry system, enhancing its versatility. The M3 system, already operational in countries such as Germany, Great Britain, and Latvia, was recently upgraded and delivered to Sweden.

“The Improved Ribbon Bridge represents a significant advancement in bridging technology, enabling seamless multinational cooperation and robust support for NATO operations,” GDELS said in a press release.
