Germany and Patria sign agreement for mortar variants in CAVS programme

By Defence Industry Europe

Germany and Finnish defence company Patria have signed a work package for the development and qualification of mortar variants within the Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) programme. This agreement marks Germany’s commitment to the CAVS initiative, following its official entry into the research and development framework in 2024.

The work package, valued at approximately €50 million, involves the construction of CAVS NEMO and CAVS mortar command and control variants. These new variants will be integrated with German mission systems and undergo qualification to meet the Bundeswehr’s operational requirements.

Patria’s NEMO variant features the company’s 120 mm turreted mortar system mounted on the Patria 6×6 armoured vehicle, both recognised as leading solutions in their respective fields. The contract’s outcomes are expected to benefit other current and future participants in the CAVS programme by enhancing system interoperability and capabilities.

Jukka Holkeri, Executive Vice President of Patria’s Global division, welcomed the agreement as a significant step for the programme. He highlighted that the new 120 mm turreted mortar system introduces advanced performance capabilities, potentially attracting further interest from CAVS members. Development and qualification will take place in cooperation with German industry partners, with future serial production involving KNDS, FFG, and JWT.

Patria leads the CAVS programme, drawing on over four decades of experience in armoured vehicle development and troop transport solutions. The programme emphasises collaboration among participating nations, leveraging local industry expertise for vehicle production and maintenance. With more than 800 Patria 6×6 vehicles already ordered and over 200 delivered, the programme remains open to additional European countries with aligned equipment needs.
