The consortium, which also includes Huld, DA-Group, the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), and Lockheed Martin, aims to enhance situational awareness and multi-domain operational capabilities. Insta brings decades of experience in defence solutions, including command and control (C2) systems, and expertise in processing and integrating sensor data into modern C2 platforms.
“The most important prerequisite for multi-domain operations is a real-time situational picture,” said Petri Reiman, Senior Vice President at Insta. “We want to engage in unique collaboration with top domestic and international experts, ensuring the continuous development of situational awareness and security in an increasingly networked world.”
The project includes the development of high-performance Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven analytics, and mobile ISR cells tailored for Arctic and extreme weather conditions. Insta’s contributions will focus on leveraging its expertise in data integration and AI to improve operational efficiency across the consortium’s platforms.
Lockheed Martin will support the project with its Global Automated Target Recognition (GATR) system, which uses AI to rapidly analyse satellite imagery for enhanced decision-making. “Lockheed Martin’s advanced mission solutions will provide the Finnish Defence Forces with enhanced situational awareness and reliable decision support for multi-domain operations,” said Rod Drury, Lockheed Martin Space’s Vice President for Global Business.
The consortium’s collaborative approach underscores Finland’s commitment to developing dual-use technologies for defence and space applications. As part of the F-35 program, the initiative is expected to strengthen Finland’s technological capabilities while fostering opportunities for international collaboration with NATO allies and other nations.
