Netherlands to acquire AGM-179A JAGM missiles for AH-64E Apache attack helicopters

By Defence Industry Europe

The U.S. Department of State announced the approval of a potential Foreign Military Sale (FMS) request submitted by the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The request involves the possible acquisition of 296 AGM-179A Joint Air-to-Ground Missiles (JAGM), produced by American defence giant Lockheed Martin, along with a comprehensive support package.

The proposed package includes training variants (AGM-179 JAGM CATM), mock-ups, diagnostic devices, spare parts, and other necessary equipment. The total estimated value of the deal is capped at USD 215 million, with the final amount to be confirmed upon the signing of a government-to-government Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA).

The JAGM missiles are intended to equip the Royal Netherlands Air Force’s Boeing AH-64E Apache attack helicopters. Should the agreement be finalised, the Netherlands would become the third export customer for the missile system.

To date, the AGM-179A JAGM has been ordered by the United Kingdom in small quantities and by Poland, which is believed to have acquired the full approved amount of 460 units. The Republic of Korea has also received approval to procure a limited batch of 152 missiles.

The missile has been integrated with both the Bell AH-1Z Viper and Boeing AH-64E Apache platforms. Designed to replace legacy systems such as the AGM-65 Maverick and AGM-114 Hellfire, the JAGM offers advanced guidance and targeting capabilities for modern battlefield requirements.
