Northrop Grumman has announced the release of its latest innovation in medium-calibre weaponry, the M230 Link Fed (M230LF) Dual Feed Bushmaster Chain Gun. This new development introduces a dual-feed capability to its established 30x113mm chain gun, marking a significant advancement in both counter-uncrewed aerial systems (C-UAS) and ground combat engagements.

The M230LF Dual Feed Bushmaster Chain Gun is a new iteration of the existing M230LF, designed to allow operators to switch between two types of ammunition without the need for mixed ammunition belts. This feature enhances operational efficiency by enabling a seamless transition between different types of rounds depending on the nature of the threat. Recommended ammunition for this system includes the XM1211 proximity-fuzed rounds for targeting aerial threats and the XM1198 high explosive, dual-purpose rounds for anti-armour engagements.

Currently at Technology Readiness Level 6, the M230LF is on the verge of live fire demonstrations, scheduled for early 2025. Achieving this milestone indicates that the cannon has progressed through various stages of development and is nearing the final phase of testing before it can be fully operational in combat scenarios.

Dave Fine, Vice President of Armament Systems at Northrop Grumman, highlighted the strategic advantages of this new technology, stating: “The M230LF Dual Feed Bushmaster Chain Gun offers new flexibility by switching between ammunition paths using dual-feed technology. Using advanced technology combined with five decades of battle-proven experience, this next-generation cannon will empower operators to quickly respond to threats. This chain gun is the latest in our Bushmaster line to deliver reliable, multi-mission capabilities addressing the evolving threat environment.”

This innovation marks the M230LF as the world’s first medium-calibre chain gun equipped with a dual-feed system, enhancing its adaptability in dynamic combat conditions. The ability to instantly switch between ammunition types means that operators can efficiently engage diverse targets, optimising mission outcomes and reducing reload times.

For current users of the M230LF, the transition to the dual-feed version is straightforward. The new model retains a similar weight profile and maintains around 60% part commonality with its single-feed predecessor, ensuring that repairs and maintenance can be carried out swiftly with minimal disruption. Northrop Grumman has also confirmed that production of the single-feed M230LF will continue for customers who prefer the traditional setup.
