The AMV operated at the Parola military testing area while its driver remained in Japan. The system combined drive-by-wire controls, secure 5G connectivity and live situational data to give the operator an effective view of the vehicle and its surroundings.
Patria said the same technology could support unmanned logistics and convoy operations. It could also provide a foundation for autonomous waypoint navigation and higher levels of vehicle autonomy.
“The demonstrations were a great success, drawing a large number of attendees from the Japan Ministry of Defence and defence-related companies. This event reflects the strong interest in Patria’s remote driving capabilities in Japan and internationally, as well as the confidence placed in our local partner, the Japan Steel Works,” said Janne Räkköläinen, Patria’s Vice President, Market Area World.
Patria DOME supplied real-time situational awareness during the trial. Satellite data from ICEYE added information about the wider operating environment.
Nokia, SAVOX and Basemark provided technologies supporting communications and visual awareness. Telia supplied the secure connectivity used to transfer operational data between Tokyo and Finland.
Patria has spent several years developing unmanned and remotely operated capabilities across multiple domains. Its current work includes AI-enabled systems and technologies intended to move armoured vehicles towards greater autonomy.
The trial also demonstrated how an armoured platform can operate within a broader network of telecommunications, satellite and situational-awareness services. Patria presented the AMV’s modular design and drive-by-wire controls as the basis for further development of remotely operated and autonomous capabilities.
