Scranton Ammunition Plant boosts production to support Ukraine’s defence

The Scranton Army Ammunition Plant in Pennsylvania, a key supplier of artillery shells used by Ukrainian forces in their conflict with Russia, has increased its production capacity by 50% to meet the rising demand. U.S. government officials announced the production boost this week during a visit to the historic factory, which is undergoing a USD 400 million modernisation project.

The Scranton facility plays a crucial role in the manufacturing process by cutting and forging 2,000-pound (907-kilogram) steel bars into 155 mm howitzer rounds.

These rounds are then shipped to a plant in Iowa, where they are packed with explosives and fitted with fuses before being deployed to Ukraine, where they are in high demand.

Recently, the Scranton plant, along with two other nearby ammunition facilities in Wilkes-Barre, has increased its production from 24,000 rounds per month to 36,000 rounds per month.

The plant’s top official stated that three new production lines are currently being developed, which will enable the facility to produce even more of these critical munitions in the future.
