Sweden: Sisu delivers first batch of new armoured vehicles to FMV

By Defence Industry Europe

The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has taken delivery of the first batch of GTP-type armoured vehicles from Finnish supplier Sisu Oy. This initial delivery includes two variants: an armoured personnel carrier (APC) capable of transporting up to ten people and a double-cab variant with a flatbed and canopy, designed to carry five personnel.

“These vehicles are fundamentally ballistically protected, four-wheel-drive vehicles with a total weight of 16.5 tonnes,” explained Henrik Sundberg, FMV’s project manager. “They share a common base chassis that allows for the replacement of modules to create new variants. This modular vehicle concept is reminiscent of the previously used SEP (splinter-protected unit platform) in Sweden.”

Designated TGB24 in Sweden, these vehicles are set to be delivered to the Swedish Armed Forces starting in the fall. Currently, FMV is conducting verification processes, and in November, they will begin user and technician training for Armed Forces personnel, focusing on command support systems.

Joint procurement with Finland

The procurement of these vehicles was conducted under a joint framework agreement between Sweden and Finland. This agreement emphasizes joint security of supply and the opportunity to develop, manufacture, and utilize the vehicles collaboratively.

“With this agreement, we’ve managed to reduce development costs and unit prices through joint orders,” said Micael Ågren Berner, head of FMV’s wheeled vehicles department. “This is an excellent example of effective cooperation and swift processes within the framework of the Swedish-Finnish defence cooperation, known as FISE. The smooth dialogue between FMV, the Swedish Armed Forces, and Sisu Oy has been essential for securing this order and delivery in such a short time.”

In total, Sweden and Finland have ordered over 260 vehicles, including various other variants such as single cab, anti-aircraft, command, medical, and reconnaissance vehicles. These vehicles will be delivered to the respective Armed Forces as part of the ongoing cooperation between the two nations.
