TKMS has launched the frigate Cunha Moreira, the third vessel in Brazil’s Tamandaré programme. The launch took place on 26 June at TKMS Estaleiro Brasil Sul in Itajaí, Brazil.

The vessel, designated F202, is part of what TKMS described as the most modern and innovative naval project ever developed in Brazil. The event marked another step in the modernisation of Brazil’s naval capabilities.

The ceremony was attended by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Defence Minister José Múcio Monteiro and Brazilian Navy Commander Marcos Sampaio Olsen. Paulo Alvarenga, CEO of TKMS Brazil, also attended alongside senior representatives from participating companies, civil and military authorities, and defence industry representatives.

The traditional launching ceremony was conducted by Mrs Marcella Olsen, wife of the Commander of the Brazilian Navy, who served as the vessel’s godmother. TKMS said the event reinforced its commitment to technology transfer, Brazil’s Defence Industrial Base and the development of military shipbuilding capabilities in the country.

The Cunha Moreira is the third of four Tamandaré-class frigates under the current programme. The first vessel has already been delivered to the Brazilian Navy, while the second is expected to begin sea trials in the second half of the year.

Paulo Alvarenga, CEO of TKMS Brazil, said: “The progress of the Tamandaré Class frigates demonstrates the Brazilian industry’s capability to execute complex and strategic projects for national sovereignty. The launching of the Cunha Moreira symbolizes not only another important milestone of the PFCT, but also the consolidation of a long-standing partnership between Brazil and Germany.”

“Through the consistent and reliable execution of the program, the shipyard has developed a proven track record in delivering complex naval platforms, creating opportunities to support the naval requirements of regional partners of the Brazilian Navy.” TKMS said the programme also underlines the role of Brazilian industry in complex naval construction.

The company said recently signed commitments by the governments of Brazil and Germany, as well as TKMS and other stakeholders, foresee the possible construction of four additional Tamandaré-class frigates. The potential expansion would build on the existing programme and the industrial capacity established at the Itajaí shipyard.

TKMS framed the launch as both an industrial and naval milestone for Brazil. The company said the programme supports the strengthening of national defence capabilities while deepening defence industry cooperation between Brazil and Germany.
