The United States has approved a USD 2 billion arms package for Taiwan, including advanced missile and radar systems to bolster the island’s defence capabilities amid rising tensions in the region.

Announced by the Pentagon and the State Department, the package includes the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) and radar systems valued at USD 1.16 billion and USD 828 million, respectively, aimed at enhancing Taiwan’s air defence and surveillance.

The Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) confirmed that the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO) has requested three NASAMS medium-range air defence systems.

These include 123 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM-ER), radar units, communication systems, and advanced encryption and identification technologies. Additionally, Taiwan will receive AN/TPS-77 and AN/TPS-78 radar systems, spare parts, training equipment, and extensive technical and logistics support.

“This proposed sale aligns with U.S. national, economic, and security interests by supporting Taiwan’s efforts to modernise its military capabilities,” stated the Pentagon.
