General Atomics awarded contract for next-gen high-frequency modem development for U.S. Navy

By Defence Industry Europe

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) has secured a contract to develop a new generation of high-frequency (HF) modems for the U.S. Navy. The task order, awarded on October 4, 2024, by the Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Pacific, will support the Navy’s Naval Information Warfare (NAVWAR) Program Executive Office Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence (PEO C4I).

The project involves creating a cost-effective, software-defined Generation 2 HF modem tailored to the Navy’s stringent operational requirements. The modem will be compatible with ship, submarine, and shore environments, ensuring rapid deployment to meet the Navy’s operational needs.

GA-ASI’s contribution includes waveform and modem development, rigorous testing, and on-site technical support for the NAVWAR PEO C4I program. Jeff Hettick, GA-ASI’s vice president of Agile Mission Systems, highlighted the modem’s importance, stating: “The Gen2 Modem delivers the security and resilience the U.S. Navy needs for its tactical radio fleet modernization efforts. These modems will be the heart of the HF system, providing high-speed, long-range HF communications that meet the Navy’s demanding program of record requirements, which includes beyond-line-of-sight communications in a satellite-denied environment.”

The development work is set to span a 16-month base period.
